First off let me say I enjoy reading your stuff when I can. I live in the New Orleans area, and wish I had geottn a chance to train with you. Now when it comes to the subject of this particular article (I know i'm late commenting on it) I disagree with a couple of things. As far as self defense on the ground, BJJ is probably the best form around, but it does not have all the answers. All the technique in the world is not going to get you away from a man who has you outweighed by 50 to 100 lbs, especially if you are drunk, sick, or caught completely off guard. We don't all have the time or money to learn bjj, or any form of self defense for that matter; but we can all practice being aware of who may be creeping up behind us. Tips and Tricks can be useful, as it is better to have a little knowledge than none at all. It would be nice to be able to practice self defense 3 to 4 days a week for the rest of out lives, but it isnt realistic. The reality is, most of us work at jobs that don't require us to be self defense experts, so the intrest just isnt there.I, for one, would definately buy your book. I am a firm believer in self defense, and the more knowledge a person can absorb, the better off they will be. But a specific style, system or philosophy is not going to save anyone. Life is just too unpredictable.
ClaireJanuary 8, 2013Hi Alessio,I am pleased you deidced to experiment with writing a blog! This is a very timely article for me. Just this morning I deidced to start making experimentation more of a specific intention in 2013. I naturally am drawn to experimenting with different ideas and new challenges, so I have spontaneously done this in the past, but I would like to experiment with doing so in a more purposeful/structured way. You have provided the perfect springboard. Thanks Alessio.
Its funny you say that, O goshi is my favorite tokui waza lol, Yes Judo can be used in self desnfee but that is not the main purpose of Judo, this is not up for debate but its the truth. Judo purpose is to teach physical and mental strength. Judo is not up for interpretation it is what it is and if you need some clarification go to judoforum and ask some senior sensei, they are very cool and will tell you why Judo is not Ju Jutsu and cannot and shall not be used interchangeably.
